Best Hoverboards 2018: Our Pick of 7 Out of 17 Models

When hoverboards or “self balancing scooters” first appeared on the market, celebrities and YouTubers loved showing off their best hoverboards. But in 2015, some self balancing scooters overheated or even caught fire. And that’s when the the US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an official recall of 10 hoverboard models.

It turned out that the cause of the issue were flawed batteries from China, but the hoverboard industry had taken a blow. The manufacturers went back to the drawing table to recreate the self-balancing scooter.

And what came out of this were UL 2272 certified hoverboards. This means, the new scooters are subjected to extensive safety tests and can only be sold on the US market if they pass all of those. As a proof of that, each hoverboard now features a UL certification sticker at the bottom of it.

So be assured: hoverboarding is safe nowadays! And what is more: it’s loads of fun and, if you’re a little creative, has lots of everyday applications. So we will help you find the best hoverboard for your purpose.

We started this product investigation with 17 suspects, eliminated 10 and named 1 hoverboard the “Best of the Best”. This alone will save you hours of research and possibly a headache. Plus: we’ll show you our “Best bang for the Buck” model as well as the 5 other best hoverboards we’ve selected.

We know you want product recommendations, and that’s what we’ll give you. But you should know that we take product investigation seriously, and therefore don’t judge based on gut feeling. Rather, we’re looking at the most important aspects for all hoverboards to make our evaluations more objective and comparable. If you want to find out more about which aspects to look for in a self balancing scooter (and which to ignore): you’ll find that at the bottom of this article.

1. Swagtron T1 – Our Best of the Best Hoverboard 2017

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”500″ identifier=”B01FT9KAXS” locale=”US” src=”” tag=”mirroredf-20″ width=”500″]

Basic Features (Design, Weight, Speed)

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01FT9KAXS” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Swagtron T1[/easyazon_link] is an improved version of the Swagtron T5. This hoverboard boasts an 8 mph top speed and can hold individuals up to 220 lbs. The power of its motor is 250 watts which is stronger that the Swagtron T5 model, but not so much to make a huge difference. What you get is a little bit of extra speed.

Performance (Battery life & Responsiveness)

Charging the battery of the Swagtron T1 self balancing scooter completes within 60 minutes. That’s only half the time the Swagtron T5 (above) needs. You’ll also be able to cover more ground, 7-12 miles to be precise. With the Swagtron T5 you would only cover up to 7 miles. Get ready to spend 4 hours of unspoiled fun.

Specialty Features

The Swagtron T1 comes with LED lights. These are energy efficient and will light the path when your adventure outlasts the sun. The LED features is especially loved by kids.

Other useful features are the battery level indicators, the rubber bumpers, and 2 riding modes (beginner and normal). The beginner learning to ride the hoverboard easier as it limits the speed to 4 mph. Once you’ve mastered that, switch to normal mode and you can as fast as 8 mph. The rubber bumpers slip over your rims and help protect your scooter from getting scratched or dented. Very neat feature!

When it comes to the price, the Swagtron T1 is a little more expensive than the Swagtron T5 model. But we can definitely see where that money went: the T1 boasts a superior engine. And it excels at battery and speed performance. So the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01FT9KAXS” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Swagtron T1[/easyazon_link] definitely has an edge over the T5.

2. Swagtron T5 – Best Bang for Your Buck

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”500″ identifier=”B01M3PJH3P” locale=”US” src=”” tag=”mirroredf-20″ width=”500″]

Basic Features (Design, Weight, Speed)

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01M3PJH3P” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Swagtron T5[/easyazon_link] is a great entry level hoverboard. It comes with a 200-watt motor and gear stabilization. So you’ll have more control overall and especially when riding downhill. The Swagtron T5 boasts a speed of 7 mph, which puts it right in the middle of our top 7. It finally comes with a weight limit of 187 lbs which is 33 pounds less than the Swagtron T1 (below). That means: this self balancing scooter isn’t for heavier riders.

Performance (Battery life & Responsiveness)

The Swagtron T5 takes only 90 minutes to charge. Afterwards you’ll be able to ride for about 6-7 miles or approximately 3 hours. As for responsiveness, buyers have ridden this hoverboard on grass, sidewalks, inside floors, wooden porches and hard dirt. In fact, people have been impressed with its performance on rough terrain and enjoyed riding it there. But: the Swagtron T5 doesn’t ride well on thick mud and very rocky roads.

Swagtron T5 Specialty Feature

The Swagtron T5 hoverboard comes with a helpful learning mode option. The manufacturers designed it for complete beginners. Parents get this scooter for their children and end up using it a lot. The Swagtron T5 also comes with a helpful battery indicator.

Being the most budget friendly on our list, the Swagtron T5 is a simple yet excellent choice for beginners who don’t want to break the bank. This hoverboard is UL-certified and guaranteed not to overheat. Be aware: there are cheaper knock-offs of this board and those caught fire because of flawed batteries. [easyazon_link identifier=”B01M3PJH3P” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]This is the proper, UL-certified Swagtron T5[/easyazon_link].

3. Razor Hovertrax 2.0 Hoverboard

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”375″ identifier=”B01ET6JKK6″ locale=”US” src=”” tag=”mirroredf-20″ width=”500″]

Basic Features (Design, Weight, Speed)

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01ET6JKK6″ locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Razor Hovertrax 2.0[/easyazon_link] was built for more experienced riders with one of the strongest engines we’ve seen (350 watts. So it’s no wonder that some buyers report speeds up to 10 mph. And while you might not think of that as fast – riding on a hoverboard it sure is!

The Razor Hovertrax 2.0 was made for riders up to 220 lbs of weight and offers white, blue and black as color options. So it’s standard in these 2 respects. However, the Razor Hovertrax is the only self balancing scooter we saw that features shatter resistant polymer in its outer layer. This doesn’t just protect the Hovertrax, but also gives it a glossy finishing touch .

Performance (Battery life & Responsiveness)

Charging the Rover Hovertrax 2.0 takes about 2 hours and will let you ride it for approximately 60 minutes. This is about 3 times less time than the Swagtron models above can do. If you buy this hoverboard, we suggest you buy an extra battery and take it with you.

Also, the Razor Hovertrax 2. 0 is fairly small, which makes it easy to carry. But it also has small wheels and they could cause you trouble when going over bumps or climbing ramps.

Specialty Feature

The Hovertrax 2.0 comes with nice-looking blue LED lights that enhance its glossy polymer finish. But what’s really cool is Razor’s “EverBalance” technology that automatically balances the Razor Hovertrax so you can mount and ride it more easily.

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01ET6JKK6″ locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Razor Hovertrax[/easyazon_link] is a bit more expensive than the Swagtron models above. It does feature one of the strongest engines overall (350 vs. 250 watts) and it is therefore very fast. On the other hand, the Hovertrax has a fairly short battery life (1 hour) and some buyers report that they find it difficult to ride (probably because of the smaller wheels).

4. Powerboard by HOVERBOARD

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”500″ identifier=”B01HUBS8LO” locale=”US” src=”” tag=”mirroredf-20″ width=”500″]

Basic Features (Design, Weight, Speed)

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01HUBS8LO” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Powerboard by HOVERBOARD[/easyazon_link] can hold up to 220 lbs and reach up to 8mph. That’s both average compared to the other models but: the Powerboard beeps once when reaching top speed. Buyers found this helpful – especially for children – as it helps you to be extra attentive.

Performance (Battery life & Responsiveness)

The Powerboard hoverboard will take you about 12.5 miles  or 2.5 hours on a single charge. This is more than twice the duration that the Razor Hovertrax 2.0 will last for on a single charge. And the charging process itself takes about 2-3 hours once before your first use – afterwards about 80 minutes after each use.

When it comes to riding the Powerboard, we definitely missed the learning mode option that, for instance, the Swagtron T1 has.

Specialty Feature

The Powerboard comes with front LED lights as many other of our best hoverboards in this article. But what sets the Powerboard apart is that the manufacturers have shatter-resistant polymer to the outer plastic layer. This gives you a scooter that is much more resistant to scratches than models without added polymer.

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01HUBS8LO” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]HOVERBOARD Powerboard[/easyazon_link] is the 3rd cheapest hoverboard on our list. In terms of both price and features it is most similar to the Swagtron T1. The only significant difference is: the Swagtron T1 comes with a beginner mode while the Powerboard boasts its scratch-resistant polymer shell.

5. Skque X1

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”500″ identifier=”B01LRY38HY” locale=”US” src=”” tag=”mirroredf-20″ width=”500″]

Basic Features (Design, Weight, Speed)

The turning radius on the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01LRY36NK” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Skque X1[/easyazon_link] can be zero, which means that it can be operated in a very narrow space. You can also stand still on it and even turn 360 degrees on the spot. Plus: this is the sturdiest hoverboard so far and it proudly carries up to 264 lbs of weight.

Yet, the Skque X1 isn’t your best option if speed is what you’re after. The Skque only reaches about 6.2 mph top speed. On the other hand, the Skque hoverboard is available in a variety of stylish designs which makes it a much-loved board for leisurely rides with the family.

Performance (Battery life & Responsiveness)

You should be able to ride your Skque X1 self balancing scooter for 3.5 hours. This is longer than most of the boards above last – and this is also why the Skque X1 is somewhat more expensive.

The biggest issue we found is the Skque X1’s mat area sensitivity. Apparently you need to have your feet in an very narrowly-defined spot or otherwise the hoverboard doesn’t work properly. So if you need to spread your feet apart on the board for any reason – better consider another one.

Specialty Feature

The Skque’s built-in wireless bluetooth speaker lets you connect your board with your cell phone. Now you can cruise along while listening to your favorite music. And the Skque X1’s sound is surprisingly good! We only wished the computer voice asking you if you want to pair the board with your phone wasn’t so loud.

You should be able to ride this Hoverboard at night, since it offers bright LED lights. But be aware that the board has front lights only. Still, this is the same with all other hoverboards as well.

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01LRY36NK” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Skque X1[/easyazon_link] is one of the more expensive self balancing scooters we’ve reviewed. And considering the cons we’ve mentioned, it seems slightly overpriced when compared to the Swagtron T1 or T5. Yet, what you’re getting is the cool Bluetooth feature and the longest-lasting battery we’ve seen.

6. Halo Rover Hoverboard

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”500″ identifier=”B01MF6DO6N” locale=”US” src=”” tag=”mirroredf-20″ width=”500″]

Basic Features (Design, Weight, Speed)

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MF6DO6N” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Halo Rover[/easyazon_link] is a robust hoverboard that can reach speeds up to 10 mph. Together with the Razor Hovertrax, this makes it the fastest hoverboard on our list. It isn’t brightly colored like many of the other models but its performance more than makes up for it. The Halo Rover offers superior speed, improved control over rough terrains and long lasting value.

Performance (Battery life & Responsiveness)

This Halo Rover comes with “Halo Technology sensors” that react to the surroundings and provide the smoothest ride possible. It can travel up to 10 miles or 2 hours on a single charge. This places it squarely in the middle of how far our best hoverboards can travel.

This scooter also comes with a beginner, a standard and an advanced mode. The beginner mode will make the board a little slower, so you can practice under circumstances of reduced complexity. Once you’re familiar with riding a hoverboard, you can switch to standard or advanced mode – each of which will make the Halo Rover a bit faster and more responsive.

Specialty Feature

Like a few other boards, the Halo Rover features LED headlights that will improve your visibility. What makes it stand out, though, are the aluminum protective guards which protect your legs from dirt and gravel when travelling on muddy terrain. Plus: other hoverboards have wheels, but the Halo Rover rather has tires. And they are called that way because they are super damage resistant so that you can really ride anywhere with this hoverboard (hence the name “rover”).

Finally, owners of a Halo Rover hoverboard maintain complete control via a smartphone app. It lets them track the Rover’s power, speed, and distance traveled. The app can also adjust the Hoverboard speed, steering sensitivity, and other features. A nice add-on, we say.

The price of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MF6DO6N” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]Halo Rover hoverboard[/easyazon_link] is the only true downside we could discover. It is the most expensive self balancing scooter on our list, and that’s also why it’s so far down here. Yet, if you’re willing to spend the money, you’ll get one of the best hoverboards on the market.

7. EPIKGO Hoverboard

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”306″ identifier=”B01IAPMKYU” locale=”US” src=”” tag=”mirroredf-20″ width=”500″]

Basic Features (Design, Weight, Speed)

Here comes the fastest model on our list of best hoverboards. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01IAPMKYU” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]EPIKGO All-Terrain hoverboard[/easyazon_link] features a 400 watt dual motor that can reach up to 12 mph. So if speed is your priority, this scooter should be high up on your list.

The EPIKGO hoverboard will hold up to 240 lbs. of weight, which is near the top of what we’ve seen. This is in part because the EPIKGO is 2x more powerful and 30% larger than the other models presented here. What this means is more foot space, a more stable ride and more control. At the same time, the EPIKGO isn’t great for small people, especially kids.

Performance (Battery life & Responsiveness)

In terms of battery life, the EPIKGO seems to pay the price for its power. Despite beign powered by a UL 2271 certified Samsung battery, it only lasts up to 1.5 hours and it takes 2 hours to charge.

On the other hand, it’s very responsive du to its extra power, and the 8.5-inch rubber tires. They offer very good grip and let you climb over any obstacle.

Specialty Feature

What’s really special about the EPIGKO scooter is that you can truly “go anywhere” – just as the manufacturer advertised. It will take you over sand, grass, dirt, gravel, and even puddles (because it’s waterproof). This is the best “all-terrain” hoverboard on the market.

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01IAPMKYU” locale=”US” tag=”mirroredf-20″]EPIKGO[/easyazon_link] is almost 2x as expensive as the Swagtron, Razor, Powerboard or Skque models. This is why we’ve put it last on our list. But that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in terms of quality. By contrast, you get what you pay for: a hoverboard that can ride where others on this list get stuck, and one made of quality parts that last.

What You Should Look for in a Hoverboard (& What You Can Ignore)

Basic Features: Design, Weight, Speed

Every hoverboard boasts different characteristics when it comes to design, weight and speed. A black design is classic and can be your friend if you plan to ride on dirt and muddy streets. Yet, self balancing scooters exist in all kinds of designs now. Want to go colorful or elegantly white? You can!

Choosing a lightweight hoverboard is important if you want to cover distances on it (e.g. short commute to work). This will give you a longer battery runtime and will also make your life easier when you have to carry your board (e.g. up into your office). Also, you can expect quality scooters to reach about 12 mph maximum speed.

Performance (Battery Life & Responsiveness)

Not all hoverboards are equal when it comes to their charging cycles. And running out of battery on the street is definitely a nuisance! We’ll give you general charging and runtimes. But keep in mind: if you’re particularly leightweight, you’ll gain some runtime.

Also think about the area you want to cover with your self balancing scooter. Some of them are better for rough terrains, while others need a perfectly smooth surface.

Specialty Feature

We at Best Patrols believe that your hoverboard should reflect your individuality. And there are plenty of options for that. Whether it’s all-terrain wheels, a bluetooth option or a flashing light on the back: choose your special feature to your liking!

Hoverboards range in price from about $250 – 700. Of course, more expensive doesn’t always mean better – especially since better is always relative to your personal needs. So you might not want to spend an extra $50 on a scooter with LED lights if you plan to ride around your office hallways. When getting a hoverboard for your child, however, this feature might be become worth the $50.

Finally, if you’re a beginner and not sure you’ll stick to your hoverboarding: don’t break the bank initially. Test the waters with our “best bang for the buck” hoverboard first.
